Sri Lanka has its own unique New Year celebration called “Sinhala and Tamil New Year”, which usually falls on the 13th and 14th of April. The celebration is based on the movements of the sun and is considered a time for renewal, cleansing, and starting fresh. It is one of the most important cultural festivals in Sri Lanka and is celebrated by people of all religions and ethnicities.
During the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, Sri Lankans engage in a variety of traditional activities and customs, such as preparing special foods, wearing new clothes, exchanging gifts, and lighting firecrackers and fireworks. Some of the most popular traditional foods include kiribath (a type of rice cake), kavum (a sweet fried snack), and kokis (a crispy biscuit-like snack). Many families also engage in traditional games and sports, such as tug-of-war and pillow fights.
Before the celebration begins, we have decided to help our Heronature staff by donating dry food.
